How
antidepressants work
On
a neurological level depression seems to be caused or at least
indicated
by changes in neurotransmitter levels and/or changes in the
neurotransmitter-receptor sensibility towards neurotransmitters.
Consequently, most antidepressants target this mechanisms where they
act by increasing the neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Depending
on which type of antidepressant is used the mode of action is slightly
different.
Serotonin/norepinephrine
reuptake inhibitors and Tricyclics
Antidepressants block the
re-uptake
and the destruction of the neurotransmitters Norepinephrin and
Serotonin, while Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors only block the re-uptake of Serotonin,
and Monoamine Oxidase
Inhibitors work through
blocking the
breakdown of neurotransmitters. Other depression drugs with different
mode of action also exist.
