Who
is at risk for depression?
In
principle
depression can hit anyone. However, certain people in certain
situations have a higher risk to get depression than others. Risk
factors are for example a genetic pre-disposition (indicated i.e. by
family members who have had depression); stress; an unhealthy
lifestyle, certain environmental poisons, hormonal changes, other
organic illnesses, negative life events, such as the death of a good
friend, an accident, the loss of work, etc. In order to get depression
a given patient has to be exposed to a couple of such risk factors. So
even if you have a genetic pre-disposition for depression you do not
necessarily have to become depressed during your life-time. However,
the avoidance of risk factors is especially indicated for genetically
pre-disposed people.
