Why Do People Get Depressed?
For
Causes
of depression: Why do people get depressed?
There
are
various views on the causes of depression. genetical models indicate
that depression happens more often in genetically pre-disposed
individuals. Studies with identical twins showed for example that there
is a 67% chance that both will get depression, if one of them is
depressed. Psychological models are based on the notion that depression
is caused by negative life-events, stress and other psychoenvironmental
factors. Biological models point out that on a molecular level
depression is caused by disfunctional neurotransmitter-regulation and /
or changes in neurotransmitter-receptor activities. Influences such as
hormonal changes in the body, intoxication, etc. have also been
associated with depression. In the end no single one of this
explanations is likely to be the one and only cause of depression and
it is accepted knowledge that many causes of depression need to be
combined to actually lead to depression.
